La Sociedad de Ornitología Neotropical (SON) es una organización dedicada a promover el estudio científico de las aves de la Región Neotropical y de sus habitat, tanto en sus áreas reproductivas como en sus áreas no reproductivas, y a compartir de la información científica. Un método en el cual se disemina la información está a través de la publicación de la Revista de la Sociedad, Ornitología Neotropical, ahora en su décimosexto volumen anual.

La Revista se cita extensamente en la literatura de Ornitología y está indizada por las organizaciones científicas principales. La Sociedad también desempeña un papel cada vez mayor en el apoyo a estudiantes como es evidente en el recientemente establecido del Fondo de Becas François Vuilleumier, que proporciona apoyos a los estudiantes graduados de América latina y del Caribe para estudiar las aves neotropicales.

También estamos estableciendo un Fondo de Conservación en honor a nuestro fundador, el Dr. Mario A. Ramos Olmos. Sin embargo, es sobre todo con el patrocinio de los Congresos de Ornitología Neotropical que la sociedad ha estimulado interés y el intercambio de la información referente al estudio científico de los pájaros del Neotropics.

The Committee for the Francois Vuilleumier Fund for Research on Neotropical Birds has awarded funding to two Latin American graduate students for their research on Neotropical birds.  This year, five students applied to the Fund which provided $900 for student research this year.  The committee offers congratulations to the two Francois Vuilleumier Fund awardees for 2008, including:

Blas Fandiño from Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Argentina) for the project entitled: “Patrones de diversidad de aves en Santa Fe (Argentina) y efectividad de las áreas protegidas en su conservatión.” (Patterns of diversity of birds in Santa Fe (Argentina) and effectiveness of protected areas for conservation.)

Eduardo Martín from Laboratorio de Investigaciones Ecológicas de las Yungas (Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Argentina) for the project entitled: “Promiscuidad en aves con reproducción cooperativa: implicancias ecológicas y evolutivas en Coryphistera alaudina (Furnariidae).” (Promiscuity among birds with cooperative breeding: ecological and evolutionary implications in Coryphistera alaudina (Furnariidae).)
 
I wish to offer congratulations to the two awardees and wish them well in their research as well as to offer thanks to the members of the FV Fund committee (Daniel Cadena, Miguel Marini, Grace Servat, Philip Stouffer, Francisco Vilella) who assisted with the evaluations this year.

The Francois Vuilleumier Fund endowment should continue to grow, despite recent downturns in the economy, and we hope to offer more student support in the future.  We therefore encourage more students to apply to the fund, which has an application deadline of 15 September of each year. Fund information and guidelines are available on the Neotropical Ornithological Society website.  Please help us circulate information about the fund to interested graduate students in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Finally, I encourage all members to provide a donation to the fund when they renew their annual memberships.  All donations, no matter how small are appreciated and will help the endowment to grow so that we can fund all worthy student applicants in the future.
